OUDiLHum(Osaka University Digital Library of Humanities) The Rare Books and Manuscripts Collection of the Digital Library of Humanities at Osaka University

Our Mission

Indian Ocean World Studies project (INDOWS) is one of the regional studies projects implemented under “Global Area Studies Program”, launched by National Institute for the Humanities (NIHU). This project at Osaka University (HINDOWS) advances research in the theme of ” Hybridity and Creativity in Literature and Ideas” in the Indian Ocean Rim area. OUDiLHum is a digital collection of rare books and manuscripts initiated as part of this research.
In our research, we encounter many rare books and manuscripts. We have recognized that these materials are often lost without proper management and preservation, and that valuable books are underused due to difficult access. Consequently, we have taken action. With the understanding and cooperation of the owners, we are digitizing a rich collection of rare books and manuscripts spanning several centuries. This project aims to disseminate knowledge and expand educational opportunities for researchers and students worldwide. Emphasizing the preservation of historical documents and their use as educational resources for future generations, we seek to make these precious materials easily accessible. This will allow people around the world to understand and appreciate their academic and cultural value.

Features of the Collection

  • Historical Importance: These documents are significant historically, culturally, and academically. They cover a wide range of eras and regions, conveying the knowledge and thoughts of people from the past to the present.
  • Diversity: The collection includes manuscripts, first-edition books, maps, paintings, and other documents.
  • Accessibility: Anyone, anywhere, can access these precious resources stored in the Osaka University Knowledge Archive (OUKA) through the Internet, significantly expanding opportunities for education and research.

Contributions to Research and Education

  • Support for Researchers: We support discoveries and interpretations in academic research. The digitized materials facilitate detailed analysis and comparative studies.
  • Educational Programs: Students and faculty can directly use these materials in educational programs and classes, allowing for direct experiences of history and culture.
  • Public Access: The general public can also use these valuable resources, deepening interest in history and culture.

Future Prospects

We aim to open new horizons in research and education by digitizing more materials and making them available to people worldwide. Through this collection, we hope that the knowledge of the past will contribute to future development.
