Rezai Baghbidi Hassan “A New Look at Ādāb al-Ḥarb wa al-Shajāʿa: A Persian Treatise on the Rules of War Dedicated to the Sultan of Delhi Iltutmish”

Outcomes

The 4th HINDOWS Literature Seminar was held online, with 5 participants including the presenter. Rezai Baghbidi, the presenter, gave a general overview of the contents of ādāb al-ḥarb wa al-shajāʿa (‘Rules of War and Bravery’), a Persian treatise written in Lahore or Delhi in the beginning of the 13th century. The book was written by Fakhr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr, entitled Mubārakshāh and best known with his pen name Fakhr-i Mudabbir, who presented it to the Sultan of Delhi Īltutmish (reign: AD 1211-1236). The oldest and most correct manuscript of the ādāb al-ḥarb wa al-shajāʿa is kept in the British Museum (Add. 16853) and contains an introduction and 34 chapters. A fuller version with 6 additional chapters is kept in the British Library (MS 647) and bears the title ādāb al-mulūk wa kifāyat al-mamlūk (‘Rules for the Kings and the Welfare of the Subjects’). The first 6 chapters of the ādāb al-ḥarb wa al-shajāʿa and all the 6 additional chapters contained in the ādāb al-mulūk wa kifāyat al-mamlūk are devoted to the qualities that kings should possess, and the responsibilities of kings in the appointment of efficient officials. All the subsequent 28 chapters of the book deal systematically and comprehensively with a wide range of subjects relating to war, thus making the book a valuable source of information about the military system of Medieval India.
